Marvel is set to explore the past of another of its characters, this time with a Venom mini-series that heads back to the days of the Lethal Protector.
We want to eat your brain
If you’re a comics fan who dates back to the 90s, then you remember well that Venom wasn’t the what he is now. Back then, Venom was a villain-turned kinda/sorta anti-hero. Yeah, he took on bad guys sometimes, but he wasn’t very nice at all. And he was flat-out crazy too.
Of course, since then we’ve seen a massive shift for Eddie Brock and his symbiote. At this point he’s pretty much a straight up hero, but that’s not where we find him in the newest book from Marvel to bear his name.
This new comic is a throwback to some of Venom’s earliest days. Suitably, Venom: Lethal Protector finds one of the men who created the character’s first adventures taking over again.
That would be writer David Michelinie, who was right there at the beginning, alongside Todd McFarlane himself.
Before Carnage and space gods, clones and toxins, and the revelation that he was a father, Eddie Brock was a down-on-his-luck reporter who had tried to take his own life and been saved by an extraterrestrial alien. In the spirit of hit titles like X-MEN LEGENDS and MAESTRO, explore an earlier era of Marvel Comics for an all-new, horrifying tale that not only revisits the wicked web-slinger’s past, but hints at what’s to come in his future!
“Getting to do a multi-issue story with the original Venom was like sitting down to dinner with an old friend–who wants to eat your brain for dessert!” Michelinie said. “It was both fun and exciting, and I hope people enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.”
