Fantasy fans, get ready for a whole stack of classic games. The Gold Box series of Dungeons & Dragons titles is on the way to Steam.
Draw thine sword
Are you familiar with the Gold Box series of cRPGs? I can’t say I am, but if you’re a Dungeons & Dragons fan and were playing PC games in the late 80s/early 90s, chances are you know them all too well. The set of titles is expansive, and is still mentioned regularly by genre fans.
Up til now though, there was no real way to play these games via modern machines. But if you’ve been hoping that would change, your day has arrived. That’s thanks to publisher SNEG, who’s bringing the catalog to Steam.
The games included are:
- Forgotten Realms: The Archives Collection One (Eye of the Beholder I, II, and III)
- Forgotten Realms: The Archives – Collection Two (Curse of the Azure Bonds, Gateway to the Savage Frontier, Hillsfar, Pools of Darkness, Pool of Radiance, Secret of the Silver Blades, Treasures of the Savage Frontier, and Unlimited Adventures)
- Forgotten Realms: The Archives – Collection Three (Dungeon Hack, Menzoberranzan)
- Krynn series (Champions of Krynn, Death Knights of Krynn, The Dark Queen of Krynn)
- Dark Sun series (Shattered Lands, Wake of the Ravager)
- Ravenloft series (Strahd’s Possession, Stone Prophet)
- D&D Stronghold: Kingdom Simulator
- Al-Qadim: The Genie’s Curse
These won’t be exactly the same as you might remember, though I mean that in a good way. SNEG will be adding in DOSbox support, to get them up and running on those modern PCs. In addition, you’ll find a special Gold Box Launcher, so there’ll be a unified hub for all the titles.
And finally, there will companion apps. Those will be out for the complete Eye of the Beholder series, but also “the majority of other Gold Box Classics”. The app will be titled Gold Box Companion, and will “manage dungeon mapping for you, provide easier access to journal entries, let you access spellbooks, and much more! “
Look for the collection to arrive on Steam as of March 25th, 2022. Yep, the adventures continue in short order, at the end of this month.
