Playing off the legacy of The Legend of Zelda, Xel (get it?) is almost ready to debut. Check out the latest details, and see it in action in the new trailer.
Xelda
While Nintendo’s classic aRPG series is decidedly fantasy-based, the upcoming Xel takes the complete opposite approach. Yes Assemble Entertainment and Tiny Roar’s new title looks a bit ‘sword and sorcery’ at first glance, but it’s more sci-fi than anything else. Though that doesn’t change the fact that the developers are very open with it being a “love letter” to Zelda.
Xel looks like it’s every bit that. It seems like it should be instantly familiar to anyone who’s played one of Link’s adventures, even with the change in themes. Xel will offer up adventuring for sure, and more than a little puzzle solving. It also has a curveball ready for players though, in the form of time-travel.
Well, that and the wild color schemes.
A wondrous 3D sci-fi fantasy, XEL follows an amnesiac protagonist named Reid, who finds herself shipwrecked on a mystifying planet with no memory of who she is or where she’s from. During her quest, Reid will meet a cast of charming characters, engage in thrilling top-down dungeon-clearing combat, and of course, find and upgrade a whole arsenal of valuable items and tools — some of which may help her jump through space and time itself. As Reid delves deeper into the mysteries surrounding the world of XEL, she discovers an endless cycle of peril. Does she have the strength and courage to end the cycle for good, or will she too become trapped?
Assemble Entertainment press release
Xel is coming up this summer for the Switch and the PC (by way of GOG and Steam). It’s also set to land on the Xbox Series X|S, PS5, PS4, and Xbox One some time later this year.
