From Big Bad Wolf Studio, the world of Vampire: The Masquerade is set to continue this year in Swansong. Here’s the first look at its gameplay.
Shhh
In the long-lived tabletop game that is Vampire: The Masquerade, secrecy is paramount. Like with other pieces of vampire-related fiction, Vampire’s… vampires… are a mysterious and hidden lot above all else. They survive in the shadows of modern society. A supernatural race of predators living right under mankind’s nose.
And it seems as though that’ll be a major part of the latest video game to take on the license. Vampire: The Masquerade – Swansong is coming up this year from Nacon and Big Bad Wolf Studio. Like its title-characters, it’s a game that’s been a bit mysterious since its reveal a few years back. But that’s all changed now, as we get closer to launch.
Along with a trailer showcasing the game’s role-playing, we have a bit of detail delving into what you’ll have to do to operate in Vampire’s rough world.
Mysterious assassins have attacked the Boston Camarilla – a secret society comprising most of the vampires in the city. Galeb Bazory, Emem Louis and Leysha are tasked by Hazel Iversen with learning the identity of the attackers as well as the motives underlying the large-scale attack. The orders are simple: infiltrate, investigate and get answers, using supernatural powers if necessary.

Undead details
First off, as you might’ve been able to tell above, Vampire is not an action title. It’s a role-playing game first and foremost, and tasks players with completing investigations into a series of attacks on the Boston Camarilla (vampire den).
As a trio of vampiric heroes, Galeb Bazory, Emem Louis and Leysha, players must “identity of the attackers as well as the motives underlying the large-scale attack”. Of course each of these three characters will have different strengths and weaknesses, but they all can also be built up as your play.
The game sounds like it will be trying some interesting variations on the RPG theme too. You’ll have to do “battle” with some NPCs by relaying on your wits, in combative dialog streams. Making that somewhat tougher than you might expect will be the vampire’s constant thirst for blood.
Use too many of your powers and you’ll need a top-off. That won’t be all that easy to get, as you will always have to maintain the aforementioned secrecy. Not that you’ll have much of an option to go without, because lack of sustenance will result in the “beast” taking over, and that’ll limit how you can interact with normal humans.
All in all, there seems to be a very interesting game taking shape here with Vampire: The Masquerade – Swansong. Get ready to sink your teeth in, as it lands on consoles and the PC on May the 19th, 2022.
